Winter Rug Suitability Guidelines

We're often asked questions regarding what winter rug would suit the weather of your region. Since this will depend upon a few things, we've come up with a rough set of guidelines for you when selecting the right weight and type of rug for your horse:

No-Fill Waterproof Rugs

When to use:
• Sunny but rainy
• Warm but rainy
• Can be used as a windbreaker

When not to depend upon it/use at your own risk:
• It is snowing where you are
• When it's raining days on end
• There is a severe wind chill and it is raining
• If your horse is clipped
• If your horse is sensitive to the cold and the forecast is grim
• When it is hot weather and your horse has no shade – horses run the risk of severe dehydration from over-rugging or not removing a rug during the day when the horse is likely to sweat. Please use your common sense and make sensible choices.

No-Fill Waterproof Mesh Rug

When to use:
• Sunny with light showers
• Warm with light showers
• Can be used as a windbreaker

When not to depend upon it/use at your own risk:
• Moderate to heavy rain (the mesh is not waterproof!)
• It is snowing where you are
• There is a severe wind chill and it is raining
• If your horse is clipped
• If your horse is sensitive to the cold and the forecast is grim
• When it is hot weather and your horse has no shade – horses run the risk of severe dehydration from over-rugging or not removing a rug during the day when the horse is likely to sweat. The mesh in this rug is not enough on a hot day for summer cooling – switch to a breathable cotton rug in this case. Please use your common sense and make sensible choices.

• If your horse is clipped (you may like to add another rug underneath)

300g Fill Waterproof Rugs

When to use:
• Very cold and rainy
• Heavy wind and rain
• It is snowing where you are
• For clipped horses in very cold weather (you still may like to add another rug underneath depending on where you are in the country and your horse's sensitivity)

When not to depend upon it/use at your own risk:
• It is warm out and your horse has no shade – horses can run the risk of severe dehydration from over-rugging. It is even worse if you double-rug, so consider removing the under-rug during the day. Please use your common sense and make sensible choices.
